College of Fisheries celebrates World Food Day
College of Fisheries, Lembucherracelebrated World Food Day 2021 on the theme “Our actions are our future- Better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life” today. World Food Day is celebrated on October 16 every year to mark the anniversary of the founding of the United Nation Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO). This global event marks a day calling for worldwide awareness and collective action to combat the issue of hunger and ensure healthy diets for all.
At the outset, Prof. Ratan Kumar Saha, Dean of the college in his address spoke about the importance of this year’s theme. He emphasized upon consumption of farm fresh and organically produced food. He hailed the farmers’ role in providing hygienic chemical free food for heathy environment and better nutrition for human body. The reduction in wastage of food is very important from perspective food security in the country and hence creating awareness about food wastage is the need of hour.
The Chief Guest, Dr. A. K. Tripathi, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Zone-VI & Zone-VII, highlighted the efforts made by ICAR Institutions in tackling food and nutritional crisis in the country. He spoke about Nutri-Sensitive Agricultural Resources and Innovations (NARI) initiative to produce nutritionally rich food, dietary diversity and food fortification to overcome malnutrition and ensure production in adequate quantity and quality to meet the dietary requirement of population in a sustainable manner.
During the programme, lectures were delivered on the topics “Fisheries for Better Nutrition and Better Environment” by Prof. R. K. Majumdar and in his talk he highlighted nutritional value of fish and importance of fish as healthy food. In another invited talk on “The Future of Food: We are What we Eat” Dr. Mahesh B. Tengli highlighted importance of food system and its impact on climate change, human health, economy and agriculture. He also advocated consumption of planet-based diet having low environmental impact.
The programme was attended by all the faculties, non-teaching staffs, research scholars and students of the college. The programme ended with vote of thanks by Dr. A. D. Upadhyay, Coordinator of the programme.
