The state of Sikkim is one of the biodiversity rich area located in the Eastern Himalaya of Great mountain range of Indian Himalaya. Keeping in view of the diverse agro-climatic conditions, high quality soil, adequate rainfall and rich horticultural background of Sikkim state, the Central Agricultural University, Imphal took the decision to establish College of Horticulture, Bermiok, South Sikkim to strengthen horticulture, education, research and extension activities during the year 2015.
The basic mandate of the college is to develop appropriate human resource for carrying out various horticultural activities in the state and to develop relevant technologies suitable for horticultural activities for the welfare of farming community of the state and to disseminate horticultural technologies, sustainable development of horticulture among the various stake holders.
The college has been established with perspective to impart education in different branches of horticulture and to further the advancement of learning by undertaking research in horticulture and allied activities.
The college is in its nascent stage and at present U.G degree in Horticulture (Hons.) is offered. Three batches have successfully passed out from the college and 90% of the alumni are currently pursuing their higher studies from universities/Institutions of national and international repute. Among the hill states, the Sikkim which has already earned national fame in Organic Cultivation of crops, it is hoped that establishment of College of Horticulture will achieve a milestone in making Sikkim as a global research leader in Organic Horticulture.
